I used to live in an apartment complex. I would only get about 4 or 5 trick-or-treaters come to my door, but I made sure I bought a couple bags of candy. It wasn't about giving the candy out, it was all about eating the leftovers myself. And I made sure there were lots of leftovers.
Then I realized that I was an adult, and I could act like one. This means that I can buy candy whenever I want, and eat as much as I want. I don't have to wait for Halloween as an excuse, and I don't have to ask permission. I started buying bags of "fun size" Milky Way and Snickers regularly.
Occasionally I'll try some other brands to see how they go. I like Hershey's Milk Chocolate with Almonds chocolate bars, but the "fun size" versions are not nearly as good. So now when Halloween comes, I dig out all my candy and rank it. The favorites I keep in a jar beside the couch, and the candy ranked at the bottom goes into a bowl to give out to the kids.
I live in a house now, so I get a lot more trick-or-treaters at the door. I was happy to see all my lower-ranked candy go out the door, but I started getting seriously stressed as I had to start handing out higher-ranked candy.
But the night ended nicely, without me having to give out any of my top 3 ranked candy. I only had to give out the bottom 3 ranked candy. Phew.
